Did you know 22 April is Earth Day?
Started 43 years ago, Earth Day is “widely credited with launching the modern environment movement”.
According to the Earth Day Network (EDN), “All of EDN’s activities, whether greening schools or promoting green economic policies at home and abroad, inform and energize populations so they will act to secure a healthy future for themselves and their children.”
21 April was chosen for our first Seasonal Sunday Lunch as much because it sits neatly in the middle of a season, as because it is the Sunday before Earth Day! Eating locally and seasonally is a wonderful way to reduce your impact on the environment.
Some simple ways you can impact your little corner of the world with small changes:
- Grow your own food – plant a simple pot of basil on the kitchen window, a balcony trellis of beans, or a full backyard garden plot. Harvesting produce at home is rewarding and good for the earth.
- Leave the car at home – walk the couple blocks to the shop, bike to work or even carpool. Even if it is only every now and then, the knock-on effect of less motorised transport is enormous.
- Shop local – find a Farmers’ Market with actual farmers, seek out a local bakery or butcher or cheese maker. Reduced food miles and supporting local producers are a way to broaden your positive environmental impact.
- Host a Seasonal Sunday Lunch – now is the time to use that home-grown produce or to try something new at the markets. Bringing friends and family together is the best way to spread the word about local-seasonal eating.
Each year over 1 billion people across the globe take part in Earth Day and their 2013 campaign, ‘The Face of Climate Change‘ is in full swing.
Climate change has many faces, it is seen in the impact on people and places but also in the face of those who are doing something about it. This year Earth Day is asking everyone to take a photo telling their story: share how climate change has impacted you and/or what you are doing to be part of the solution. Find out more ad share a photo here.
As the organisers of Earth Day 2013 say, “Together, we’ll highlight the solutions and showcase the collective power of individuals taking action across the world. In doing so, we hope to inspire our leaders to act and inspire ourselves to redouble our efforts in the fight against climate change.”
And with that we’re off to lunch.
