Rediscover Australian Pears Cookbook

With a season running from late summer through to winter, eight distinctly unique varieties of Australian pears are a true sign of autumn. They grace our tables in everything from salads to cakes to slow cooked roasts and soups, and this year Australian Pears has created a collection of pear recipes that celebrate the fruit to the fullest.

Australian Pears Cookbook

Rediscover Australian Pears, a new cookbook from the industry body for Aussie pear growers, honours the versatility of Australian pears with over 60 sweet and savoury recipes from cooks and chefs including Maggie Beer, Vincent Gadan, David Bitton, Justin North, and myself (yep!)

Country cook Maggie Beer owns an orchard in the Barossa Valley, SA, and is part of an industry which now produces 130,000 tonnes of pears in Australia each year. “It’s no secret that I have a fondness for this delightful fruit. The cookbook is a great way for home cooks to understand how pears can work well in both sweet and savoury dishes and which kind of pear is suited to which dish,” says Beer.

According to second generation pear grower Jimmy Kalafatis, “We know that around three-quarters of Australian households eat pears but many don’t realise how versatile they are or know how to cook with them. This cookbook showcases how the fruit can be used in recipes for breakfast, lunch, dinner, dessert and snacks,”

With recipes including Caramelised Pork Belly, Shaved Pear and Fennel Salad; French Toast with Caramelised Pears; Roast Pear and Duck Sliders; Upside Down Pear Pudding and Vanilla Custard; and even an Asian Pear Slaw; every pear fan is guaranteed to find plenty of new recipes to add to their repertoire.

Rediscovering Australian Pears is available from newsagents for $17.95, but until July 3 Australian Pears is giving away one copy a day on their Facebook page.
